Great Wall of China Trip: Planning It from Your Country

Two things about a Great Wall trip depend on where you are coming from: whether you need a visa, and how you fly. Everything else — booking entry, choosing a section, getting out of Beijing, what to wear, what the walking is like — is identical whatever passport you hold.

Start with the entry rules

This is the only part of the trip that can stop it, and the only part that has to be settled months rather than weeks ahead. Four separate schemes decide the answer for any given passport — unilateral visa-free entry, bilateral agreements, transit rules, and the ordinary tourist visa — and they are frequently merged into a single misleading number in travel articles.

The distinction that catches people out: visa-free entry and visa-free transit are different things, and several major passports have the second without the first.

If your country is not covered

Most of the world is not on that list, and almost none of what a country guide contains is actually passport-specific. What differs for you:

What works the same from anywhere

The order that works for a long-haul trip

1. Check your entry rules and start any visa application early.
2. Fix the travel dates, allowing a spare day around the wall.
3. Set up payment apps while you still have time to fix problems.
4. Book Great Wall entry as soon as the window opens for your date.
5. Book flights and accommodation around that fixed point.
6. Decide transport for the wall day last, because it has the most alternatives.

The one non-obvious step is the fourth. Everything else in a trip has alternatives; a capped section on a fixed date does not.
