Can Foreigners Book Great Wall of China Tickets Online?

You book online, in advance, under your own name. The sections most visitors book — Badaling, Mutianyu, Simatai — run a real-name reservation system: the ticket is tied to the passport number entered when it was bought, and the gate checks that document. Foreign visitors have two working routes — the official WeChat platform that sells both Badaling and Mutianyu, or a reseller that takes your passport details and sends you a voucher. Both are legitimate; the second one exists because the first assumes you can install WeChat, receive a verification code, and pay with a Chinese payment method.

Real-name registration is the rule everything else follows

China’s real-name ticketing system (实名制) means the ticket carries an identity. When you book you supply a name, a document number and a contact number; at the gate that document is what gets verified.

Three consequences worth knowing before you start:

• One document, one ticket, one day. At Mutianyu, one document means one ticket per day — you cannot buy a spare “just in case” ticket under your own passport.
• Names must match the passport exactly — same spelling, same order, no nicknames, no dropped middle names. A mismatch is the most common reason people get stopped at the gate.
• Nobody can lend you a ticket. A ticket bought under someone else’s passport is useless to you, and buying “leftover” tickets from strangers online means the name will not match.

Booked correctly, this system is fast: you walk up, show the passport you booked with, and you are in.

The two booking routes, and which one is yours

Use the official channel if you are already inside China’s payment ecosystem — it is cheaper and it is the same tickets. Use a reseller if you are booking from home, if your booking has to work on the first try, or if you want someone to contact when something fails. Neither route gets you around real-name registration; the reseller simply fills the same fields on your behalf.

Is there an official Great Wall booking site?

There is no single official website selling every section in English. Each section is run by its own administration, and the closest thing to a central official channel is the “Throughout the Great Wall” (长城内外) WeChat service account, WeChat ID changchengnw, which sells both Badaling and Mutianyu and hands off to its ticketing mini program. It provides bilingual Chinese/English ticket purchase and supports passports and Foreign Permanent Resident ID Cards.

Mutianyu also publishes an English site at en.mutianyugreatwall.com with a reservation center and the official visitor rules. Treat anything else claiming to be “the official Great Wall booking site” as a reseller — which is fine, as long as you know what you are paying for.

Book on the official channel, step by step

1. Install WeChat and set up payment before you need it. A payment method that actually works is the prerequisite, not the last step.
2. Find the official account. In WeChat, search changchengnw, or scan the QR code published on the section’s own site. Tap Follow.
3. Open the ticketing mini program from the bottom menu of the account.
4. Switch the interface to English before you enter anything — the passport field is easy to miss in Chinese.
5. Pick the section, date and time slot. Slots exist to spread arrivals; weekend and holiday slots go first.
6. Enter each visitor’s details: document type (passport), passport number, given name and surname exactly as printed.

8. Pay, then screenshot the confirmation. Keep the QR code offline. Mobile data at the sections is uneven and a dead phone at the gate is a dead ticket.

Book through a reseller with your passport

The flow is shorter and it happens in your own language.

1. Choose the section and ticket combination — entry only, or entry with cable car or shuttle. Compare what each combination costs on our Great Wall ticket price page before you pick.
2. Enter passport name, passport number and date of birth for every traveler, not just the lead booker.
3. Pay with a normal international card.
4. Receive the voucher or QR code by email. Some sections issue the code immediately; others confirm within a few hours.
5. Arrive with the voucher and the passports it was booked under.

The trade-off: you pay a margin for a checkout that works from anywhere and someone to contact if the booking fails.

What you need before you open the booking page

• Passport scans for everyone in the party. Copying numbers from a photo beats retyping from memory.
• An email address and a phone number that receives messages. Bookings and QR codes arrive there.
• A working payment method. International card for resellers; WeChat Pay or Alipay for the official channel.
• A decided section and date. The system is not designed for browsing — slots disappear while you deliberate.
• A backup date. Weekends, Chinese public holidays and Golden Week sell out first.

How far ahead tickets open

Booking windows differ by section and are the detail people get wrong most often. Mutianyu releases tickets a set number of days ahead; Badaling’s window is reported inconsistently across sources. Opening hours matter here too: ticket sales close before the park does, so a late slot is shorter than it looks.

At the gate: what actually happens

Mutianyu. No ticket exchange. Once the booking succeeds you go straight to the gate and verify identity with the original document — passport for foreign visitors, travel document for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan residents. If the document is lost or damaged, the electronic QR code from the reservation is the fallback.

Badaling. Verification accepts passports, permanent resident ID cards, paper tickets or QR codes. Some categories — free and discounted tickets in particular — are routed through the comprehensive service window (综合服务窗口) near the entrance to collect a paper ticket first.

Simatai and Gubei Water Town. Resellers book on passport details and check-in happens at the visitor center with the QR code and the passports used for the booking.

Jinshanling.

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

• Payment fails at the last step. The commonest failure, and it is a payment-setup problem, not a ticketing one. Fix it in advance with the apps you need to travel in China.
• The passport field does not appear. You are in the Chinese-language interface, or the document-type selector is set to Chinese ID. Switch the language, then switch the document type.
• The verification code never arrives. Foreign numbers do not always receive Chinese SMS. If you are stuck, book through a reseller instead of fighting the form.
• A name typo. Retype from the passport, not from memory, and check before paying — changes usually mean cancel and rebook.
• Booking the wrong gate or lift. At Mutianyu, cable car and toboggan tickets route you to specific entrances. Buy the combination you actually intend to use.
