How to Book Mutianyu Great Wall Tickets Online

Only admission is compulsory. Everything else — the shuttle to the lift stations, the two lifts, the toboggan down — is a choice to make before you book, because the ticket you buy decides which gate you walk through when you arrive. The tickets and what each one is for

• Admission — gets you onto the wall, and nothing else. Children pay a reduced rate.
• Shuttle bus — runs between the parking area and the lift stations. Not optional in practice unless you enjoy a long approach walk before the climbing starts.
• Cable car — enclosed gondola to the upper wall, sold one-way or return. The all-weather option and the one that lands you nearest the best views.
• Chairlift — open-air, serves the other end of the restored stretch, sold return.

Which combination to buy

Your ticket decides your gate

Mutianyu routes visitors by what they bought: cable car ticket holders enter through the North Ticket Gate, and chairlift or toboggan holders use the Slide Ticket Gate. They are not next to each other. Turning up at the wrong one with the wrong ticket means a walk you did not plan, usually uphill, usually with a queue at the end of it.

Two more entry details worth knowing before you arrive:

• No ticket exchange. Once the booking succeeds you go straight to the gate and verify identity with the original document — a passport for foreign visitors. If the document is lost or damaged, the reservation QR code is the fallback.
• Children under 1.2 m ride the shuttle bus and cable car free.

• One document, one ticket, one day. You cannot hold a spare ticket under your own passport.

Discounts and free entry

Discounted and free admission categories at Mutianyu are set locally and need the matching document at the gate — the full list is on Great Wall ticket prices. Book the discounted ticket type at purchase; the gate verifies, it does not reclassify you.

If a lift is closed when you get there

Open-air rides stop first. Wind, thunderstorms, ice and scheduled maintenance take out the chairlift and the toboggan well before the enclosed cable car is affected, and closures are announced on the day rather than in advance. Three consequences for a ticket you already hold:

• Plan the descent as the flexible part. Walking down is always available; the slide is not.
• A closed ride is a refund question, not a swap. Staff do not convert a toboggan ticket into a cable car ticket at the gate — you claim it back through the channel you bought from.
• In winter and in storms, buy the cable car. It is the option that keeps running, and the one worth paying for when the forecast is uncertain.

What your ticket does not cover

• A guide. The section runs its own guide service from the ticket area, in group and private formats, at set intervals through the day. It is booked and paid separately from admission, and it is not the same thing as a tour from Beijing.

What people get wrong

• Assuming the shuttle is included. It is a separate ticket at this section, and skipping it costs you the first hour of your legs.
• Buying a return lift plus the toboggan. One of the two goes unused.
• Booking the cable car and heading for the slide gate. Check which gate your ticket names before you set off from the parking lot.
• Leaving the passport in the hotel safe. The booking is tied to it, and a photograph does not clear the gate.
• Booking for the wrong person. Every traveler needs their own ticket under their own document; there is no family ticket.
