How to Reserve Badaling Great Wall Tickets Online

Two things decide your Badaling booking: which route you intend to walk, because each side has its own ride up and down, and how early you book, because this is the section where the daily limit actually binds.

What to buy for your day

Pick the route before the ticket. The lifts are not interchangeable between the two sides, and a ticket bought for one is no use on the other. What each route is actually like is on what to expect at Badaling.

The daily limit is the real constraint

Badaling admits a fixed number of visitors per day, and unlike most sections it reaches that number — reliably on weekends, and through the Chinese public holidays. Two consequences worth planning around:

• Your date is decided by availability, not the other way round. If the trip has one possible day, book the moment the window opens.

Entry slots

Along with the daily limit, Badaling books visitors into entry windows rather than letting everyone arrive at once. Practically, that means the slot is part of the booking rather than something you choose on arrival, and the early one goes first — which is also the one you want, because it is ahead of the coaches.

Booking for more than one person

Everyone travelling needs their own ticket under their own document, including children on reduced admission. You can pay for the group in one transaction, but the passport details have to be right for each person — the gate matches document to booking, not headcount to receipt.

Two things that follow: collect everyone’s passport details before you start rather than mid-checkout, and check the spelling against the document rather than from memory. A mismatch is fixed by cancelling and rebooking, which on a capped date may mean losing the slot.

Changes and refunds

Refund and date-change rules depend on where you bought, not on the section. Official channels generally allow a change or refund while the reservation day is still running; resellers set their own windows, and cheaper fares are usually the least flexible. Rain is not normally grounds for a refund — the wall stays open in the wet, and only the open-air rides stop.

At the gate

Entry is verified against the document you booked with. Passports, permanent resident ID cards, paper tickets and QR codes are all accepted at the verification points. Getting there, and why it affects the booking

Discounts and free entry

Reduced and free admission categories exist here as at every section, with the documents checked at the gate rather than assumed. What people get wrong

• Booking the lift for the wrong route. North and south have different rides; check which side your ticket serves.
• Assuming the train ticket includes the wall. Two separate purchases, two separate bookings.
• Leaving it to the day. At most sections that is merely risky; here it fails on any busy date.

• Bringing a photo of the passport. The gate checks the document itself.

This is the classic pairing sold out of Beijing, and it changes the booking rather than the ticket: the two sites are separate admissions, booked separately, each with its own timed entry.
